At the same time, water that soaks into the slope builds up behind walls and within the soil, and saturated ground is heavy, unstable ground.
So a sloped garden has two jobs: move surface water away safely, and relieve the water trapped within the soil before it causes pressure or a slip.
Reading your slope before you dig
Before choosing any solution, work out where water comes from and where it wants to go.
- Watch the garden during a heavy downpour and note where water collects, where it races and where it overflows.
- Identify the high point feeding the slope and the lowest exit where water must ultimately leave.
- Check what sits at the bottom: a wall, your house, a neighbour’s boundary or a public drain.
- Note any existing retaining walls and whether they have weep holes.
Water must always have a legal, safe place to discharge. Pushing it onto a neighbour’s land or overwhelming a shared drain creates disputes and, on strata land, complaints to the MCST.
Surface drainage: catching water before it runs
Channel and trench drains
A linear channel drain set across the slope or along the foot of a terrace intercepts sheet flow and carries it to a controlled outlet. These are ideal at the top of patios, across driveways and at the base of steps where water would otherwise pool.
Swales and graded falls
A swale is a shallow, planted channel that slows and guides water while letting some soak in. Combined with gentle, deliberate falls across paving and lawn, swales handle a lot of rain without looking like engineering.
Catch pits and outlets
Collected water needs somewhere to go. Catch pits gather runoff and feed it into a piped outlet to the drain, or to a soakaway where ground conditions allow.
Subsurface drainage: relieving water in the soil
Surface drains only handle what stays on top. Water that soaks into a slope needs its own escape route, or it builds pressure behind walls and saturates planting.
- French drains: a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects groundwater and carries it away. Run along the back of a retaining wall or across a slope, they are one of the most reliable tools available.
- Weep holes: small openings through a retaining wall that let trapped water escape. Any wall holding back a slope should have them, backed by a free-draining layer.
- Drainage aggregate behind walls: a layer of gravel or a drainage membrane against the back of a wall stops fine soil clogging the system and keeps water moving down to the pipe.
Terracing: turning a slope into stable, usable space
Terracing breaks one steep slope into a series of flatter levels held by retaining walls. Done well, it transforms an unusable bank into gardens, seating and planting beds, and it dramatically reduces the speed of runoff.
Each terrace still needs to drain. The key principles are simple:
- Give every level a slight fall towards a channel or catch point, not back towards the wall it sits above.
- Provide drainage behind every retaining wall, with weep holes and aggregate.
- Link the levels so water steps down through a managed path rather than spilling over edges.
- Plant the faces and edges to bind soil and slow what surface water remains.
Retaining walls are structural, so terracing usually involves civil and hardscape works alongside the drainage design, and the two have to be planned together from the start.
The Singapore angle: tropical rain, fast growth and fierce slopes
Singapore’s rainfall is intense and frequent, so a slope here is tested far harder than the same slope in a temperate climate. A short, heavy storm can deliver more water in twenty minutes than a slope sees in a week elsewhere, which is why drainage that looks oversized on paper is often exactly right.
